This wilderness camping trip in Algonquin Park is an ideal holiday for those of us who like to see the world from more than one vantage point. It is a combination of a canoe trip with a hiking trip. We can experience the forest from both the lakeshore and from the heart of the forest. We will be canoeing into an interior lake, where we will establish a base camp. From here we will be able to access the hiking trails in Algonquin.
After meeting at Finch subway station (optional - if you choose to drive yourself we will meet you up north) we will make the 3 hour drive up to Algonquin. Lunch will be served on the shores of a fresh water lake, with a view to our destination. We will paddle a short distance across our first lake, and then do our only portage. This is always a good "photo opp" so be sure to bring your cameras! At the end of the 960m portage lies our interior lake. The only way to get here is either by hiking in or by coming the way we did. There are no motor boats, and very few people on this lake.
After we set up our camp we are free to relax and
enjoy our surroundings. A refreshing swim, some sun worship, or a good book!
Dinner, as always, is a group effort. This has an effect of making it
extraordinarily tasty!
Today we venture forth on a 16km hike through the Algonquin forest.
Since we will be leaving our camp behind, we need only carry a day bag. Along
the way we will be stopping at several places including a lovely vantage point
that overlooks several beaver lodges. We stop for lunch on the lakes' edge, so
a swim is definitely a possibility.
About 6 hours later we will return
to our campsite, and another delicious dinner. As it gets dark we can watch the
Milky Way rise over our heads. Up here the stars are truly breathtaking!
After a lazy morning, and a delicious breakfast, this day is a reverse of day 1. We will pack up camp and start out trek back to civilization. We should get back to Toronto at about 7pm.
